Dora Explores Beaumont

We had a great day on Friday when children's favourite Dora the Explorer braved the snow to visit us.

A very excited three year old Paige Matthews (pictured) got the chance to give her hero Dora a cuddle. Paige was one of hundreds of young children who flocked to the centre to meet the star.

Dora's visit even hit the local news, check out the article CLICK HERE

Dora's appearance in the centre is the first of a fun packed schedule of free events at Beaumont to keep local children entertained during the school holidays.

"It's been wonderful to see Dora given such a warm welcome by shoppers of all ages. It has been Dora's first visit to Beaumont Shopping Centre and we hope she'll be back to see us again" said Sarah Duffin, Centre Manager, Beaumont Shopping Centre.

As part of our Dora day we held a raffle in aid of the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Thanks to everyone's generosity we raised £140. Our six lucky winners including Michelle Clarke, Mrs Driver and Sara Latif won Dora the Explorer toys donated by Argos.

And a big thanks to Subway who kindly donated lots of chocolate chip cookies that we handed out to hungry Dora's fans at the event.

Other events Beaumont Shopping Centre during 2010 will include an Easter farm, a Doctor Who inspired day, a visit from the UK Garrison storm troopers and the renowned Beaumont Beach party.

Beaumont Shopping Centre kits out new girls' football team

A new girls' football team is kicking off its season in style, thanks to kit sponsorship by Beaumont Shopping Centre.

Beaumont Shopping Centre has signed up to back the under 16s team at Caterpillar Girls Football Club. The new season kicks off on Sunday September 6 with a home game at Desford against Rugby Town.

Sarah Duffin, Beaumont Shopping Centre manager, said: "We are the girls' number one supporters in what will be an exciting season. The enthusiasm surrounding the team and the club is fantastic, and we are very pleased to be able to help them look the part in their splendid black and red kit; the girls will play their part by playing good football and, hopefully, winning lots of games."

The club was formed this year by Paul Ward and Gareth Powell with the aim of giving girls the opportunity to play football no matter what standard they currently play at. The club plays its home games at the Caterpillar Sports & Social Club.

Gareth Powell, the club's chairman, said: "The girls come from across Leicester, including three from Beaumont Leys, so it is great to have the backing of Beaumont Shopping Centre. It's great the shopping centre is backing grassroots football. Such support really makes the difference."

The under 16 team scored a notable pre-season friendly victory over Leicester City Ladies under 18, with a 6-3 scoreline including a hat-trick for Caterpillar Girls' Thia Wright.

The new club also has an under 12s team and an academy for younger girls aged from five to nine. More than 30 youngsters turned up for the first academy training session. "It shows the enthusiasm there is out there for football for girls," said Gareth.
